Derrick’s own job, Southeast Georgia

Forestry mulching clears overgrown land in a single pass. A mulching head with a spinning toothed drum cuts brush, vines and small trees, grinds them up, and spreads the chips back across the ground, so there are no burn piles and nothing to haul away. D Brown Off the Chain Lawn Care is a Hinesville land clearing and lawn care company owned and run by Derrick Brown, who has been cutting trees and clearing land in Southeast Georgia since he was 18. He walks every tract before the machine goes in, runs the equipment himself, and doesn't book jobs so close together that yours gets rushed. Our forestry mulching services cover everything from pine stands off US-84 in Liberty and Long counties to home lots around Richmond Hill. Call or text Derrick at (912) 332-8354 for a free on-site estimate.

01When to call

Signs Your Land Needs Forestry Mulching

Coastal Georgia's heat and rain keep the understory growing almost year-round. Every year you wait, the stems get thicker, the machine time goes up, and so does the price. Thick growth also hides what you need to see before you build, hunt or sell: soft ground, old wire, trash and snakes.

  • You can't walk the property line without a machete, or you can't find the corners at all.
  • The undergrowth beneath your pines is taller than you are, and the trees you want to keep are competing with it for light and water.
  • A homesite or building lot needs opening up so a surveyor, soil tester or builder can see the ground.
  • Shooting lanes, deer stand trails and food plot edges have closed in since last season.
  • Vines, briars and saplings are swallowing a fence line, ditch bank or field edge.
  • You're getting ready to list land for sale and want buyers to see what they're buying.
  • You just bought land near Fort Stewart and don't know what's under the brush.

02What’s included

What Our Forestry Mulching Includes

Forestry mulching is selective clearing: one machine cuts standing brush and small trees, grinds them, and leaves the mulch on the ground in the same pass.

  1. 01

Walking the Property Before the Machine Goes In

Before any mulching starts, Derrick walks the tract on foot, looking for what can ruin a job or tip a machine: soft spots, hidden stumps and holes, old wire, and junk buried in the brush. On one job he pulled an entire bicycle out from under the overgrowth before it could end up in the equipment. He also confirms your boundary and marks the trees you want kept.

  2. 02

Mulching Brush and Small Trees Where They Stand

The work is done with a Fecon forestry mulching head on a Bobcat compact track loader. It takes brush, vines and small trees down to ground level. Derrick opens an access lane first, then clears along the boundary so you can see the shape of the property early, then works the interior in passes. Opening the edges first also gives the machine a firm path in and out on soft ground. For lighter growth, our brush mulching service handles underbrush only.

  3. 03

Leaving a Mulch Layer That Protects the Ground

Roots stay in the soil, which helps hold sandy coastal ground in place during heavy rain. The mulch layer shades out new seedlings while it breaks down over the next few seasons. Nothing gets piled, burned or hauled off, so there's no burn permit to get and no smoke drifting toward the neighbors.

  4. 04

Working Around What You Want to Keep

You choose how far to go: mulch only the understory and leave mature pines and oaks, open lanes and trails, or take a tract down to the ground for building. When Derrick's done, the equipment comes off your land and you're left with an open, walkable floor of mulch.

03Local ground

The Overgrowth We See Most in Liberty County and Southeast Georgia

  • 1Pine stands buried in understoryPlanted loblolly and slash pine across Liberty, Long and Wayne counties fills in fast with gallberry, wax myrtle and sweetgum. Mulching the understory opens the stand without touching the pines, and a yearly pass with bush hogging keeps it open.
  • 2Low, wet groundCoastal pine flatwoods hold water after a storm. Derrick checks wet spots on foot and schedules around them so the machine doesn't rut the ground or bog down. If part of your tract may be wetland, check with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District before clearing it; they decide what needs a permit.
  • 3Debris you'd otherwise have to burnBurning land-clearing debris in Georgia requires a permit or notification through the Georgia Forestry Commission, and it's off-limits on high fire-danger days. Mulching skips the burn pile entirely.
  • 4Invasive growthChinese privet, Chinese tallow and Japanese climbing fern take over field edges and creek bottoms. Cogongrass spreads on equipment, so if you suspect it, report it to the Georgia Forestry Commission first. Once a tract is open, stump grinding takes care of whatever is left at ground level.

05Why D Brown

Why Hinesville Landowners Choose D Brown Off the Chain

Forestry Mulching · Derrick on the machine
  1. 01

    The Owner Runs Every Machine

Derrick Brown quotes your job, runs the mulcher, and walks the finished tract with you, with no crew you've never met. He's been cutting trees and clearing land since he was 18 and ran his own tree service in South Georgia before starting this company.

  2. 02

Every Tract Walked on Foot First

Derrick walks your property before any machine runs, marking keeper trees and finding the soft ground, holes and debris that cause damage when someone drives straight in.

  3. 03

    Your Job Never Gets Rushed

Three to four acres takes Derrick about a day and a half, and he books work with that time built in. He doesn't stack jobs back to back and leave yours half-finished.

  4. 04

Open 8 to 8, Seven Days

Call or text (912) 332-8354 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Sunday, and you'll reach Derrick. Learn more about Derrick and how he works.

06How it works

How Our Forestry Mulching Works

Five steps, the same on a one-acre backyard and a hundred-acre tract. Scroll to walk through them.

  1. 1Step 1 of 5

    Call or Text Derrick.

Reach Derrick at (912) 332-8354 any day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and tell him where the land is, roughly how many acres, and what you want it to look like when he's done: thinned under the pines, open for building, or lanes for hunting. He'll set a time to see it in person. Jobs start at one acre, and the minimum goes up the farther the property is from Hinesville.

  2. 2Step 2 of 5

    Walk the Property With Derrick.

Derrick walks the tract on foot, ideally with you. Together you mark the boundary, the trees to keep, and anything to leave alone, and he notes wet spots, ditches and debris before the machine is unloaded.

  3. 3Step 3 of 5

Agree on a Price and a Date.

You get a price for the whole job and a signed agreement before any work starts. Derrick schedules with enough room to finish without rushing. He takes cash, check, Zelle, Cash App and credit card.

  4. 4Step 4 of 5

    Derrick Mulches the Tract.

Derrick unloads the machine and works the job in order: access lane, then boundary, then the interior in passes, working around every marked tree. Brush and small trees go down to ground level and the mulch stays on site to protect the soil.

  5. 5Step 5 of 5

    Final Walk With Derrick.

Before the machine leaves, you walk the property together so any spot you want touched up gets done while the equipment is still there. You're left with open, walkable ground, your keeper trees standing, and nothing to burn or haul.

07Pricing

How Much Does Forestry Mulching Cost in Hinesville?

Forestry mulching is priced per job after Derrick walks the property, because two tracts of the same size can take very different machine time. The minimum job is one acre within about 50 miles of Hinesville. Farther out, the minimum is larger to cover fuel and travel.

What moves the price

  • Acreage. More acres means more machine hours, though big tracts usually cost less per acre.
  • Density and stem size. Knee-high gallberry mulches much faster than a thicket of 5-inch sweetgum.
  • Ground conditions. Wet ground, ditches and hidden stumps slow the machine.
  • Selective work. Mulching around keeper trees takes longer than taking a tract down to the ground.
  • Access. Gates, narrow lanes and where the trailer can park affect setup time.
  • Distance from Hinesville. Travel and fuel are part of every job outside the local area.

Priced separately

  • Stump grinding below grade, for stumps left after mulching
  • Full land clearing for construction pads
  • Grading and land leveling. We don't offer grading, so you'll need a grading contractor for that step.

10FAQs

Forestry Mulching Questions

How much does forestry mulching cost per acre?

Forestry mulching price per acre depends on how thick the growth is, the size of the stems, ground conditions, and how far the property is from Hinesville. Derrick gives a firm price after walking the tract, and the estimate is free. Jobs start at one acre within about 50 miles of Hinesville, with a larger minimum farther out.

How long does forestry mulching take?

On typical brush, Derrick mulches three to four acres in about a day and a half. A 100-acre tract takes about a week to a week and a half. Very thick growth, larger stems or wet ground add time, and Derrick builds that into the schedule instead of rushing.

What's the difference between forestry mulching and land clearing?

Forestry mulching grinds brush and small trees in place and leaves roots and stumps in the soil. Traditional land clearing removes trees, stumps and debris, often by piling and burning or hauling. Many jobs combine the two: mulch the brush, then grind stumps where a house or driveway will go. Our forestry mulching and land clearing page covers combined jobs.

Does forestry mulching remove stumps and roots?

No. Mulching cuts stems at or just above ground level and leaves roots in place, which helps hold the soil. If you need stumps gone so you can mow, build or plant, stump grinding takes them below grade as a separate step.

Will the brush grow back after mulching?

Some species, like sweetgum and wax myrtle, resprout from their roots, and seeds in the soil sprout too. The mulch layer slows regrowth but won't stop it for good. A bush hog pass once or twice a year keeps a mulched tract open for much less than mulching it again.

Do I need to be home while you work?

No. As long as the boundary and the trees you want kept are marked during the walk-through, Derrick can work without you on site. He'll ask you to walk the finished job with him before he loads up.

When is the best time of year for forestry mulching?

Derrick mulches year-round, and Georgia winters don't slow the work down. Winter is the busiest season, because landowners want hunting lanes and camps open and the work done before spring growth starts. Booking in the fall gets you a better choice of dates.

Do I need a permit for forestry mulching in Georgia?

Because nothing is burned, mulching avoids the Georgia Forestry Commission burn permit that land-clearing burns require. If part of the property may be wetland, check with the Army Corps of Engineers first, and check your city or county for local tree or land-disturbance rules.
