McIntosh County, GA Forestry Mulching & Land Clearing Services
McIntosh County is more water than most people realize. Of its 574 square miles, about a quarter is tidal creek, salt marsh and sound, running from the South Newport River on the north line down to the Altamaha River on the south, with Sapelo Island and Blackbeard Island out past the marsh. Inland of that marsh edge, the mainland turns to low, sandy pine and hardwood flatwoods around Townsend and Eulonia and along the old communities strung out on GA-99. Darien, settled by Highland Scots in 1736 and county seat since 1816, sits on the Darien River near the head of the Altamaha delta, and the county is starting to grow again, with the 900-acre Jamestown at Darien community planned between US-17 and I-95.
That mix of timberland, marsh frontage and fast-filling brush is exactly why forestry mulching fits this county. Pine and hardwood tracts off GA-57 and Briardam Road get choked with gallberry, wax myrtle and young sweetgum within a few seasons if nobody keeps after them, and bluff lots at Shellman Bluff or Crescent can disappear under vines and palmetto. Owners clearing for a homesite, a camp or a view of the Sapelo River marsh usually want the brush gone without the scarring, burn piles and haul-off of a dozer job. A forestry mulcher grinds the growth in place and leaves a protective layer over that sandy ground, which suits coastal flatwoods better than stripping it bare.
D Brown Off the Chain Lawn Care is based in Hinesville, so McIntosh County is a short run for us: south on US-17 through Riceboro into Eulonia, or out US-84 to Ludowici and down GA-57 into Townsend. Owner Derrick Brown has spent a lifetime clearing land in Southeast Georgia, and as forestry mulching contractors in McIntosh County, GA, we take on the work this county actually produces: overgrown hunting tracts near Harris Neck, homesites going in around Darien, fence lines and pastures that have gotten away from their owners, and stumps left behind after storm cleanup. Derrick runs the machine himself on every job, from a single acre to a 100-acre tract.
Every service we offer out of Hinesville is available across McIntosh County, from the marsh-front lots along GA-99 to the timberland west of I-95. Derrick handles each job personally, whether it's one overgrown acre in Eulonia or a large tract near Townsend.
Forestry mulching is our main service and the one we recommend most often for McIntosh County land. The mulcher cuts and grinds brush, saplings and small trees in a single pass and spreads the chips back over the ground, which helps hold the sandy soil on tracts around Townsend and Ridgeville instead of leaving it bare. It works well for opening up hunting woods near Harris Neck, cleaning out overgrown property along GA-99, and thinning a lot without dragging debris to the road.
When a lot needs more than a brush cut, our land clearing services in McIntosh County take out trees, underbrush and overgrowth so the property is open and usable. We clear homesites and building lots around Darien, Eulonia and Shellman Bluff, including the kind of construction-ready clearing new projects near US-17 and I-95 call for. Derrick walks every lot first, and on marsh-front property he keeps the machine well back from the marsh edge so landowners can stay inside Georgia's buffer rules.
We offer stump grinding in McIntosh County for homeowners and commercial properties that need old stumps gone so they can mow, build or plant. We grind stumps down to or below ground level rather than pulling them, which leaves the yard intact and avoids open holes in low, wet ground near the Altamaha River and the marsh. It's common work after storms like Hurricane Irma, which brought flooding and high winds to Darien and the coast in 2017, and on lots in Townsend where old stumps have been in the way for years.
Our bush hogging services in McIntosh County keep pastures, fields and overgrown lots cut back before they turn into woods. We mow fields and food plots on farms and hunting tracts off GA-57 and Briardam Road, and knock down tall grass and weeds on vacant lots around Eulonia and Crescent. Brush hogging is a good fit for open ground that just needs regular cutting, while heavier woody growth is a job for the forestry mulcher.
We also offer landscape design, maintenance and residential and commercial landscaping for McIntosh County properties. It's a natural follow-up once a lot in Darien or Shellman Bluff has been cleared and the owner is ready to finish the yard.
Ground in McIntosh County changes fast from one side of a property to the other. The mainland sits on the low, sandy flatwoods the USGS calls the Sea Island Flatwoods, with a high water table and soils that go soft after a few days of rain, and the land drops off into cordgrass marsh along the Sapelo River, the Julienton River and the Darien River. Down by the Altamaha River, cypress swamp and old rice-field impoundments on Butler Island show how much of this county was built on wet ground. Derrick walks every property before he clears it, looking for wet spots, soft pockets and sinkholes, because a mulcher sunk to the frame in a low swale off GA-131 helps nobody.
02Getting around
Most of our McIntosh County work comes in off the main corridors. I-95 runs down the middle of the county with exits at Darien and at Eulonia, and US-17 carries the old coastal highway from Riceboro down through Eulonia and into Darien before it crosses the Altamaha. GA-57 brings us into Townsend from Ludowici, Briardam Road links Townsend back to Darien, and GA-99 loops out along the marsh through Crescent, Valona, Meridian and Ridgeville. Lots out on Shellman Bluff Road and the sand roads around Sutherland Bluff can be tight, so we look at access and turnaround room before we unload.
03The work here
The projects here follow the land. West of I-95, around Townsend and the timber country near the Townsend Bombing Range, it's mostly hunting tracts and woodland that need lanes, food plots and stand sites opened up. Along GA-99 and at Shellman Bluff, owners want bluff lots cleaned up for a home, a dock walk or a marsh view. Around Darien, growth is picking up, and the planned Jamestown at Darien community between US-17 and I-95 points to more lots that will need clearing. We also clear storm-downed pines and brush, a lesson this county learned when Hurricane Irma flooded yards here in 2017.
04Rules and seasons
Coastal land comes with coastal rules, and we work with them, not around them. Work in the salt marsh itself falls under the Georgia Coastal Marshlands Protection Act, and the Coastal Resources Division of Georgia DNR will flag the marsh-upland line on your property if you request a jurisdictional determination. Georgia's erosion rules also set a 25-foot buffer along coastal marshlands measured from that edge, and disturbing an acre or more can bring state stormwater permitting. We'll clear to the line you give us and keep the machine out of the marsh. Seasonally, hurricane season runs June through November, and winter is our busy time, when landowners near Harris Neck and the Altamaha WMA get hunting land, camps and trails opened up before spring growth and snake season.
04Why D Brown
Why McIntosh County Homeowners and Landowners Choose D Brown Off the Chain
01
The Owner Runs the Machine on Every Job
When you hire D Brown, Derrick Brown is the one in the seat, not a hired crew you've never met. The person who walked your property in Darien, Eulonia or anywhere else in McIntosh County and gave you the estimate is the same person clearing it.
02
Derrick Walks Your Land Before He Clears It
Derrick walks every property first, looking for soft ground, wet spots and anything hidden in the brush. He once found a whole bicycle buried in a client's overgrowth that a rushed operator would have run right over. On low ground near the Altamaha River and the marsh off GA-99, that walk-through keeps equipment from sinking or tipping.
03
Your Land, Treated Like His Own
Derrick treats every tract like it's his own land. That means honest work, done the way you asked for it, with the time it takes to do it right, whether it's a homesite in Darien or a hunting tract outside Townsend.
04
Big-Tract Capability Without the Rush
We don't stack jobs back to back. A 3 to 4 acre lot usually takes about a day and a half, and we handle tracts of 100 acres or more in about a week to a week and a half, which suits the larger timber and hunting properties west of I-95 in McIntosh County.
05
A Lifetime of Clearing Southeast Georgia Land
Derrick has been cutting trees, mulching and clearing land since he was 18, and before starting this company he built and ran his own tree service in South Georgia. From our base in Hinesville, the coastal flatwoods and marsh-edge lots of McIntosh County are home ground, and we're out 8am to 8pm, seven days a week.

As forestry mulching contractors in McIntosh County, GA, we cover the whole county, from Darien and the Altamaha River up through Eulonia, Townsend and Shellman Bluff to the South Newport River. From our base in Hinesville, we also serve the surrounding coastal counties and work up to 150 miles out, including Hardeeville, SC.
How much does forestry mulching cost per acre in McIntosh County?
Forestry mulching cost per acre depends on how thick the growth is, how big the trees are, how wet the ground is and how easy the property is to reach. A lightly grown pasture edge near Townsend prices very differently from a tract packed with palmetto and hardwood saplings near the marsh. Distance from Hinesville matters too, and our minimum job is about one acre, a bit larger the farther out the property is. Derrick will walk your land and give you a free estimate before any work starts.
Is forestry mulching better than traditional land clearing in McIntosh County?
For a lot of McIntosh County land, yes. Forestry mulching grinds brush and small trees in place and leaves a mulch layer over the sandy flatwoods soil, so you don't end up with bare ground, burn piles or debris to haul. That matters on low ground near the Sapelo River or Altamaha River, where bare soil washes easily after a heavy rain. If you need larger trees taken out for a building lot, we'll talk through whether mulching, clearing or a mix of both fits the job.
What does land clearing cost for a homesite near Darien or the new growth off US-17?
Land clearing cost for a homesite comes down to acreage, the size and number of trees, how dense the underbrush is, and whether the lot has wet spots or tight access. Lots around Darien and along US-17 range from light brush to mature pine and oak, so we price each one after walking it. We don't quote numbers sight unseen, but the estimate is free and Derrick will tell you plainly what the job involves. Our minimum is about one acre.
Do you offer lot clearing services for marsh-front property at Shellman Bluff or along GA-99?
Yes. We clear bluff and marsh-front lots at Shellman Bluff, Crescent, Meridian and along GA-99, and we keep the machine out of the marsh. Georgia sets a 25-foot buffer along coastal marshlands, and work in the marsh itself falls under the Georgia Coastal Marshlands Protection Act. We recommend getting the marsh line flagged by the Coastal Resources Division before clearing, and we'll clear to the line you give us.
How much does stump grinding cost per stump in McIntosh County?
Stump grinding cost per stump depends on the diameter, the type of wood, how many stumps there are and how easy they are to reach. A single pine stump in a Darien yard is a different job from a dozen hardwood stumps scattered across a lot in Eulonia. We grind stumps to or below ground level and don't pull them out. Call or text for a free estimate.
Do you offer bush hogging in my area around Townsend and GA-57?
Yes. We bush hog pastures, fields, food plots and overgrown lots around Townsend, along GA-57 and Briardam Road, and throughout McIntosh County. It's a good fit for open ground that's grown up in tall grass and weeds but hasn't turned to woods yet. If saplings and brush have taken over, we'll recommend forestry mulching instead. We work 8am to 8pm, seven days a week.
When is the best time for underbrush clearing on McIntosh County hunting land?
Winter is our busiest season for underbrush clearing, and for good reason. Landowners near Harris Neck and west of I-95 want trails, lanes and camp sites opened up in cool weather before spring growth comes back and snakes get active. There's no real winter slowdown on the Georgia coast, so we keep working right through it. Book early if you want your tract cleared before spring.
